What's new in Melbourne?

Melbourne is the best sporting city in the world ...it's official!
Melbourne won the title ahead of Berlin and Doha at the SportBusiness Sports Event Management Awards, held at Lord's Cricket Ground in London on Wednesday night November 11, 2009.
Victorian Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding says it is a great achievement for Melbourne to win the gold medal in the Sports City category at the awards, now in its third year.
"This award confirms what we have all known for a long time - no other city puts on a major sporting event like Melbourne," Mr Holding said.
"You only had to be at Flemington last week for the Melbourne Cup or be at Kingston Heath this week to see Tiger Woods and Geoff Ogilvy competing in the Masters to see our major events strategy on show."
He says the judges have recognised the passion that Melburnians and Victorians have for sport and major events.

We are excited that Melbourne has just been awarded the 15th licence for Super Rugby (starting 2011) . The spectacular Rectangular Stadium will open in March 2010. Melbourne Sports Tours looks forward  to the possibility of including Behind The Scenes Tours at this venue   in our product range .

Rectangular Stadium to light up Melbourne skyline

The new Rectangular Stadium will have Victorians glowing with pride as it lights up Melbourne's night skyline, thanks to a spectacular new lighting design.

The stadium roof will be covered with thousands of LED lights that can shine in any colour and be programmed into a multitude of patterns on par with Beijing's water cube and the 2006 World Cup stadium Allianz Arena in Munich.

Currently under construction on Edwin Flack Field in the Olympic Park Precinct, the stadium will provide Melbourne with a purpose-built, medium-sized rectangular pitch and world-class playing surface. Already attracting major attention from the community, the 31,000-capacity boutique stadium, with its unique bio-frame roof, will deliver a new sporting icon for the state.

The illuminated stadium will also be environmentally friendly, with the LED lights using around one tenth of the power required to floodlight the stadium and without any light spill into the surrounding area. The design also avoids the problems normally associated with floodlighting buildings, which can attract insects and birds.

The $267.5 million Rectangular Stadium, which will be operational in early 2010, is another piece of the jigsaw in Melbourne's suite of stadiums to cement Melbourne's claim as the sporting capital of the world.

We'll let you know how the rectangular stadium fits into the Melbourne Sports Tours program soon.

Melbourne welcomes F1 agreement

A new agreement has been reached between the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and the Formula One Teams Association on the future of the Formula One World Championship.  The 2009 Concorde is good news for Melbourne, which will host the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park until at least 2015.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation is working to improve next year's event with changes to activities on and off the track. Negotiations are in place to lure another blockbuster band to perform at the event, which will also offer more entertainment and family activities.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation released tickets for next year's event on 11 August, 2009.

Melbourne is the Sports capital of the World

According to London-based consulting and research company, ArkSports Limited, Melbourne is the best location in the world to hold a sports event! The 2006 ArkSports study aimed to determine which city in the world is the 'Ultimate Sports City' in terms of hosting international major events. Twenty cities made the initial cut based on their history of hosting sports events and were then ranked according to ArkSports by a range of criteria, including the number of annual sports events held, major events held or won up until 2010, facilities, transport, accommodation, government support, weather, legacy, public sports interest and quality of life.

Melbourne topped the rankings in several sections, including major events held or won, facilities and government support, and came second in the majority of others including number of annual events held, weather and legacy.

If you ask the question what makes Melbourne tick– the answers will include; Sports, Events, Cafes and Restaurants, Wine & Beer, Shopping, Theatre, Beaches, Sport and Aussie Rules Football.

Melbourne is home to some the finest & most perfectly situated collection of sporting venues in the world. Major facilities include the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Etihad Stadium (formerly Telstra Dome), Rod Laver Arena, VodafoneArena, Olympic Park, Flemington Race Course, Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre (MSAC) and Albert Park Grand Prix Track....all within 6 kilometres of the city centre.
